“But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
I cried to the LORD with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill.
I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around.” Psalm 3: 3-6
David was being hunted down by his son, Absalom. He was hiding in a cave when he penned these beautiful words. He was the minority, and felt like he was surrounded by as many as 10,000 soldiers! But here’s the thing… David was at peace. He knew God, and he knew that God’s purposes would prevail. He was confident in that. He could have called on his own army to defeat Absalom, but instead was depending on God’s mercy.
This makes me think of something I had just heard: If we do not learn to see God’s hand in every circumstance, good or bad, we’ll sink. Our faith will be shipwrecked. When our circumstances go against us, sometimes we think God is against us. In our darkest hour is when we need to open our Bibles to the psalms, and let God’s word comfort and encourage us.
I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me. Let’s talk about peace. David had it. I know I’ve had many sleepless nights worrying or just recounting the many ways I could have done something differently. And I know you have too. Peace comes after you pour your heart out to God. It comes when you have a total assurance that God has heard every word you said to Him. The next time you feel that your prayers are bouncing off of the ceiling, remember that as a believer you’ve been set apart by God. He always hears you. His answers may not be what you expect, and sometimes that’s difficult. But He always has something unexpected for us up His sleeve 🙂
This is one of my favorite songs. This song is from Psalm 3…
Verse 1
Lord, how are they increased that trouble me,
many are they that rise up against me.
Many there be which say of my soul,
there is no help for Him in God.
Chorus
But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me;
my glory, You lift mine head.
But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me;
my glory, the lifter up of mine head.
Verse 2
I cried unto the Lord with my voice,
and He heard me out of His holy hill.
I laid me down and slept;
I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.
Chorus
Verse 3
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people,
that have set themselves against me round about.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people,
that have set themselves against me round about.
Chorus
Vamp
Thank You for lifting,
thank You for lifting,
thank You for lifting mine head.
Chorus
