So we know that unrighteousness always has a problem with righteousness. Followers of Christ can expect to be harassed…
“Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.” 1 John 3: 13
It’s so possible, that because of persecution, we might be tempted to compromise with the world. Perhaps you’ve compromised so much biblical truth the world thinks you’re one of them (embracing the world’s morality, failure to spread gospel truths… failure to talk about sin, failure to warn about hell); the only marked difference between you and them is that you have the title of “Christian” marked besides your name. They’re comfortable with you because you pose no threat to them. If this is the case, you need to examine yourself to see if you’re really a believer. Ouch… that may hit you right between the eyes, but I say this because it will hopefully push you on to be more dedicated to Christ.
Do you know who had a really difficult time with this? Timothy. Timothy faced all sorts of pressures, conflicts, and challenges from the church and his surrounding culture. To council and encourage Timothy, Paul sent him two very personal letters. He urges Timothy to hold onto his faith in Christ, to live above reproach, and to minister faithfully. When you can, go and read 1 and 2 Timothy for yourselves. I’ll list a few verses…
“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.” 1 Timothy 1: 19
“Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. These people always cause trouble. “ 1 Timothy 6: 3-5
Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.” 1 Timothy 6: 20-21
“Persecution for the sake of righteousness” isn’t personal. Try not to take it personally… it’s directed towards Jesus. The world doesn’t have a problem with good morals, decency, good citizenship, or even the mention of God’s name. What they do have a problem with is Jesus… His righteousness and holiness. Persecution proves that we are legitimate children of God. Philippians 1: 28 should give great assurance of our salvation…
“Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God Himself. For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for Him.”
