“I am weary, O God; I am weary and worn out, O God.
I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense.
I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.” Proverbs 30: 1-3
The fact is that certain aspects of God’s nature will always remain a mystery. We can believe and put our trust in that, or we can choose not to. Remember the book of Job? Let’s take a look at some of the questions God asked Job.
Think of pride and humility… we can use these questions ourselves to probe our own humility and awe before our Creator. We fight to understand many things- especially suffering. Only God knows why the good are allowed to suffer.
Let me tell you what helps me when I find myself questioning “Why” and “Why me.” It may help someone else by directing you to how Job responds to God’s questions. He openly and honestly faced God and admitted he was the one who had been foolish…
“I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you.
You asked, ’Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful to me.You said, ‘Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.’ I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.” Job 42: 1-6
Job asked for forgiveness for questioning God’s sovereignty and justice. We sin when we angrily ask, with our clenched fists, “If God is in control, how could He let this happen?” We’re unable to see beyond today, and we can’t know the reasons for everything that happens. Again, we have to choose between doubt and trust. Will you trust God with all of your unanswered questions? Are you using what you can’t understand as an excuse for lack of trust? It’s OK to admit to God that you don’t have enough faith to trust Him.
“Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
True faith begins in such humility. Growing in faith is a constant process of daily renewing our trust in Jesus.
