“It’s just like moving the furniture,” says my husband, of me changing my blog template. LOL:) When I was still physically able, I was always moving around and rearranging the furniture. I like to be surrounded by beautiful things. I like change. Some people don’t like change, but I do. I remember taking the decorations off of a completely decorated Christmas tree… just for the pure thrill of seeing it decorated a different way! So I’m not sure how long this template is going to last, but as long as you keep reading, I’ll keep writing! That won’t change. It will change only when God says it will change:)
Before my old blog template went crazy- we were finishing Proverbs 15, and how it tells us that humility precedes honor. Writing that, I felt that I should just speak from my heart, and write a post about being humble. OK, not a problem. Let me start with this verse…
“The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: ‘I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.” Isaiah 57: 15
Wow… let me tell you that this verse is taped on the outside of the shower doors in my bathroom. I see them every day. Multiple times a day. It’s all about letting the Word renew your mind by allowing God to change the way you think. Am I right? Or am I right? Here is where God is telling us that He relates to those who are humble and repentant. What is a good definition of humility? What does it mean to be humble? Do we have to be humiliated to be humble? Let’s look at some more scripture…
“When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere people that you should think about them, mere mortals that you should care for them?” Psalm 8: 3-4
Humility is all about comparing ourselves to the greatness, the majesty, and the splendor of Almighty God. When we look at creation, we feel small by comparison! But Almighty God, the creator of heaven and earth, doesn’t want us to dwell on our smallness. Humility means having the proper respect for God. It does not mean self-depreciation. Let’s discuss pride vs. humility: The Bible warns that pride is the surest route to self-destruction. Think of the ancient city of Babylon (remember this is where King Nebby came from. The Babylonians were egocentric. Nothing else mattered—only self). Just as Babylon fell, so will proud people fall. From first- hand experience is how I know the truth echoing from that statement…
“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14: 11
How can we humble ourselves? Some people try to make others think they’re humble, but all they’re really trying to do is manipulate. Humility does not mean putting yourself down. Truly humble people compare themselves only with Christ, realize their sinfulness, and understand their limitations. On the other hand, they recognize their gifts and strengths, and are willing to use them as the Holy Spirit guides and directs; they have no desire to feed their egos. My husband once told me that ego stands for Edge God Out… that,my friends, will never be forgotten! How about you, can you… “Humble yourself under the mighty power of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5: 6
Can you?
