OK. Proverbs 2 is all about the benefits of wisdom…
“Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.
Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe.” Proverbs 2: 3-10
God says He is the One who grants wisdom! All we need to do is ask. The scriptures tell us to seek after it as if it were a treasure. I recall Jesus telling us that the door is open to us if we keep knocking. And we will find answers if we are persistent and keep seeking. Wisdom’s starting point is God, and by what’s written in the first verse, we discover He only gives it to those who earnestly seek after it. “He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.” By this we can assume that wisdom is hidden from dishonest and rebellious people. Therefore it takes effort to find and use it. Make no mistake: God gives wisdom and victory to the godly, but not to those who are wandering through life taking his gifts and resources for granted. God plainly says that if we are faithful to Him, He will protect us. The NKJV says “He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of his saints.” I believe he will protect us from the temptations that can trip us up or entangle us, especially pride and greed.
“Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman. Proverbs 2: 16
Wisdom is pictured as a woman who calls to everyone passing by. An immoral or promiscuous woman is seductive. Two of the toughest sins to resist are pride and sexual morality. “I deserve it,” says pride. “I need it,” says sexual desire. Put these two together and their appeal is deadly. When we fill our heads with God’s wisdom… we won’t succumb to pride, and when our hearts are filled with the things of God…we won’t have to worry about sexual enticement, because sexual enticement appeals to the empty heart. Yeah I’ll say it again… sexual enticement appeals to the empty heart.
My Bible commentary says this: Don’t be fooled—Remember what God says about who you are and what you were meant to be! Ask Him for strength to resist these temptations.
